On our previous website, we had a page called Wildflower Spot which featured monthly articles submitted by our very own renowned author and proponent of native plants, Helen Hamilton. Each article features a native wildflower, tree or plant that you could see during that month growing in the wild along with her personal remarkable close-up photos.
“Gardeners are beginning to realize that native plants require less care,”
says Hamilton, who lives in Williamsburg.
Hamilton worked as a high school teacher from 1966 to 1997, teaching earth science, biology and chemistry. She has also volunteered as a plant technician with the National Park Service and served as President of the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.

Hamilton authored the book Ferns & Mosses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain (2016) and co-authored a wildflower book with Gustavus W. Hall, Wildflowers and Grasses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain (2013).
The Wildflower Spot articles are organized by month and span from the latter quarter of 2006 to 2020.
